Brunch at Lafayette

Lafayette Cafe and Bakery was the perfect meet up spot for brunch with my girlfriends.  It’s a large and bright French style cafe with outdoor seating up front, a small bakery, a zinc bar adorned with a large clock and tons of seating in the main dining room.

We started our brunch with a mimosa toast, a cheese platter and lattes before moving on to our meals.  From the cheeses I loved the Pyrenees Brebis but didn’t care too much for the Tarentaise (a bit bitter) and the Tomme De Crayeuse, a soft, mild and brie-like cheese.

The winning dish was definitely the fluffy and citrusy lemon pancakes.

The rest of the dishes we ordered were good old brunch style eggs.

There’s a large outdoor seating area at the front (not pictured), perfect to grab a bite and enjoy the weather. For those looking to grab and go, there’s also a small cafe/bakery with really good pastries right when you walk through the entrance and to the right.

The strawberry eclairs were flying off the shelf but I opted for delicious macaroons instead, which they packed for me in these cute little boxes.

If you visit Lafayette, be sure to  pick up some goodies at the bakery on your way out.

A Little Dominican Bakery in the Bronx

For the past week I have been stopping in this little bakery on my way home for a piece of their coco-piña, which is a coconut-pineapple flavored loaf cake…and it is ah-amazing!

But that’s not all the goods they have so I thought to give you guys a little peek into what kind of sweets you can get at a Dominican bakery.

Dominican Bakery in the bronx

Below is the picture of the coco-piña…yep it’s only $1! and next to it is a quesillo de fresa  {strawberry cheese cake}.

coco - pina - coco piña - cake - bizcocho - loaf cake

Below is typical birthday cake and every Dominican person gets a one of these on their birthday regardless of their age…

typical Dominican cake - yellow cake - birthday cake - nyc - bakery - bronx

The cake texture is very ‘airy’ and somewhat moist but not saggy or wet and it melts in your mouth. If you get it from a bad place it can sometimes be too dry or too sweet.  Visually it looks like a tacky looking wedding cake with white suspiro {frosting} and flowers and ribbons decorations but if you ever get a chance to try it is probably the best cake you’ll ever have.   It almost always has a guava, pineapple or dulce de leche filling in the middle which makes it even more decadent and delicious.

Here is a picture of one of my favorite desserts pudín de pan {bread pudding}.  The texture is harder than usual and the flavor is different. I personally prefer the more moist kind but this one is very good.

pudin de pan dominicano - reposteria dominicana - bread pudding

The pineapple upside down cake is not Dominican but it is staple in every  bakery.

Here are other things you can get…

tornillo de vainilla - reposteria dominicana - dominican bakery

chocolate cake - dominican bakery

And of course there is different kinds of bread…

This bakery sells pastelitos de queso {cheese empandas, we call empanadas pastelitos} and tostada Dominicana {cheese and butter on toasted pan de agua}.

IMG_2319

They also have different tropical juices including tamarind, passion fruit, guava and others which is similar but a sweeter version of the Mexican agua fresca.

So there you have it, now  whenever you see this sign feel free to walk in…

Heights Tavern – Hands Down The Best Sports Bar in Upper Manhattan

Are you looking for a great sports bar in the Washington Heights / Inwood area?  You’re in the right place.  Heights Tavern is hands down the best sports bar in the area.

So what make  a Sports Bar great?

  1. Plenty of TVs Views from Anywhere + Audio – This bar has HD TVs everywhere. You will have screens to your left, in front and to your right from any table. But when watching a game, the sound is just as important and many establishments take that for granted but not HT.

  1. Extensive Beer Menu/ Good Drinks/ Happy Hour Specials -HT has over 45 beers on the menu, a great wine selection and happy hour specials.

  1. Great Wings and Bar Food– Chicken wings is a game night staple and some bar wings are simply not so great.  I like the wings and bar food here.  The skillet nachos, have a creamy white sauce at the bottom that is amazing!  You can also get soups, salads, burgers, flatbreads and entrees.

  1. Comfortable Environment -No matter how much a sports bar want to appeal to the young, modern and hip, it must maintain a casual feel to it. Nobody wants to “dress up” to go watch the game nor deal with bougie-wannabes.  Which brings me to the next point…
  1. The People – It’s nice to go to a bar where other sports fan will be cheering along. Whether you are on the same team or not – it’s always fun to be in the spirit.

With the bae enjoying the game

  1. Space/ Plenty of Seating – This one is a personal preference. I want to be comfortable sitting down at a table, enjoying the game along with my food and drinks.  Some people love to stand by the bar and that’s fine but I think having plenty of seats available is a huge plus.

  1. Location – There a plenty of bars in NYC, however this one is conveniently located at 164th street and Broadway – within <15 minutes from some Bronx areas, some Harlem areas, Inwood and Washington Heights.

If you live in the upper Manhattan area, which is your favorite Sports Bar?

If you don’t,  what do you think makes a Sports Bar great in your?  Would you add anything to this list?

NYC Restaurant Week 2014: Fig and Olive Midtown East Review

The Food and Drinks

Think food indulgence. Clean and simple presentation with wholesome Mediterranean flavor.  All dishes are cooked in olive oil and you’ll be served 3 types of olive oil from different regions with the bread.  From the bread to the dessert everything was superb.

The Service

We were greeted nicely and even though I arrived 10 minutes late we were seated promptly. I was glad because there was line of walk-ins hoping for a table. Our food came timely, empty plates removed promptly, silverware replaced and water refilled.  Everything was impeccable.

Our waiter was great and very attentive. I asked for my filet mignon medium-well however it came out well-done.  I mentioned this to my friend and the waiter who happen to be nearby must have overheard because seconds later he came by to offer to replace it.  This was honestly fantastic service because I didn’t have to ask, he came to me which eliminates the awkwardness.  I didn’t want to wait so I didn’t send it back.

The Ambiance

Candle lit, romantic and sophisticated.  Request a seat upstairs or the back of the room.
